Wrestling: Region 2 Semifinals LIVE

NOTE: Sam Schneider with a victory over Anthony Rubinetti of Demarest at 120 and Shaun Stanley of Pascack Hills with a win over Joe Jordan of Old Tappan at 220 got their 100th career wins today.

Now things get interesting.

While Friday’s quarterfinals had its share of thrills and spills but little in the way of upsets, this morning’s Region 2 semifinals feature a host of big-time matchups and rematches.

Tolotti and Burger at 113. Rubinetti and Schneider at 120. Avery Shay and Gil at 126. Trovato and Sosinsky at 152. Carfagno and Gallagher at 195.

The winner punches an express ticket straight to AC. The loser is left to battle his way through the wrestlebacks.

SEMIFINALS

106 – Jonathan Tropea (St. Joseph) d Joshua Ferreira (Garfield), 7-2; Paco Robles (Emerson/Park Ridge) d Carmen Ferrante (Bergen Catholic), 1-0.

Robles, the seocnd seed, got the winning escape with 30 seconds remaining in the third period to advance to face unbeaten Tropea.

 113 – Ian Tolotti, Dumont v John Burger, New Milford; Evan DeLuise, Don Bosco v Jason DalCortivo, St. Joseph

Burger with the first takedown early to take a 2-0 lead. DeLuise also with a 2-0 lead on DalCortivo.

Burger, who stunned Tolotti, the defending district champ, in last week’s District 7 final, rode Tolotti out in the first period to take a 2-0 lead into the second with Tolotti starting down. An escape by Tolotti but Burger takes him down again for a 4-1 lead. Burger is hot right now and wrestling very well. DeLuise still leads DalCortivo, 2-0, in the second wrestling down. Burger carries that 4-1 lead into the third period and takes neutral to start the period.

DeLuise is riding DalCortivo, still leading 2-0 in the third. Burger still holds the 4-1 lead with 1 minute left in the third.

120 – Anthony Rubinetti, Demarest v Sam Schneider, Emerson/Park Ridge; Nick Suriano, Bergen Catholic v Drew Nirchio, River Dell

Sam Schneider (Emerson/Park Ridge) d Anthony Rubinetti (Demarest), 9-4; Nick Suriano (Bergen Catholic) p Drew Nirchio (River Dell), 1:33.

126 – Pete Lipari (Bergen Catholic) v Dom Salvatore (Lodi); Avery Shay (Don Bosco) v Wilfredo Gil (Ramapo)

Lipari downed Salvatore, 4-0. Gil with an escape to start the second leads Avery Shay, 1-0.

Takedown by Gil for a 3-0 lead and rides Shay out for the rest of the period to take it into the third period, 3-0. Shay starts down in the third.

Escape by Shay to cut the lead to 3-1 with 1:15 left in third. Gil holds Shay off for the 3-1 win to advance to the finals.

Pete Lipari (Bergen Catholic) d Dom Salvatore (Lodi), 4-0; Wilfredo Gil (Ramapo) d Avery Shay (Don Bosco), 3-1.

132 – Sam Cali (Don Bosco) v Mike Foca (Hackensack); Shane Griffith (Bergen Catholic) v Brandon Loftiss (Paramus)

Cali leads 6-1 midway through second. Cali is up to 8-2 lead after two.

Griffith with the first takedown for a 2-0 lead on Loftiss early. Cali with a takedown and Foca with an escape for a 10-3 Cali lead with 1:19 left in third. Griffith continues to ride Loftiss out for a 2-0 lead after the first.

Griffith opens up a 3-0 lead with an escape to start the second. Cali is up to 12-4 with less than 30 seconds left in the third.

Cali wins 12-4 over Foca. Griffith with a takedown takes a 5-0 lead on Loftiss with 30 seconds left in second.

Griffith still leads 5-0 with 1 minute left in third. Escape by Loftiss to cut lead to 5-1. Griffith, a freshman,  goes on to the 5-1 win and the final.

Sam Cali (Don Bosco) md Mike Foca (Hackensack), 12-4; Shane Griffith (Bergen Catholic) d Brandon Loftiss (Paramus), 5-1.

138 – Kyle Bierdumpfel (Don Bosco) v Mike Worthington (Pascack Hills); Laurien Anghelina (Bergen Catholic) v Alex Sebahie (Paramus)

Bierdumpfel with two quick takedowns takes a 4-1 lead on Worthington early in first. Bierdumpfel with an escape to start the second up to 5-1.

Sebahie and Anghelina scoreless early in the first. Still scoreless with 30 seconds remaining in first as neither is able to get in on a shot. Sebahie and Anghelina are scoreless after 1 with Sebahie starting down. Bierdumpfel is up 7-2 in the third with Worthington starting down.

Escape by Sebahie for a 1-0 lead but Anghelina finally gets the first takedown with 1:30 left in the second for a 2-1 lead. Escape by Sebahie to tie the score, 2-2. Another takedown by Anghelina spinning around Sebahie for a 4-2 lead and escape by Sebahie for 4-3 Anghelina lead with 30 seconds left in second. Anghelina is obviously more comfortable wrestling on his feet. Anghelina gets in on a single but can’t finish it. Still leads 4-3 after three and takes neutral to start third. Bierdumpfel beats Worthington, 11-4.

Another takedown  by Anghelina, his third of the bout, for a 6-3 lead early in third. We have injury time Sebahie. An escape by Sebahie and another takedown by Anghelina and he cuts Sebahie so it’s 8-5 with 40 seconds left in the third. Escape by Sebahie for 8-6 with 15 seconds left. Trying for tying takedown but can’t get it. Anghelina wins 8-6.

Kyle Bierdumpfel (Don Bosco) d Mike Worthington (Pascack Hills), 11-4; Laurien Anghelina (Bergen Catholic) d Alex Sebahie (Paramus), 8-6.

145 – Matt Zovistoski (St. Joseph) v Dominick Mandarino (Don Bosco); Brady Ford (Bergen Catholic) v Kyle Cochran (Paramus)

Mandarino escape to start second to take a 1-0 lead on Zovistoski. Zovistoski with a late takedown at the edge to take a 2-1 lead after two.

Cochran with the first takedown to take a 2-0 lead on Ford with 45 seconds remaining in first. Ford rolls and escapes with 30 seconds left in first to cut lead to 2-1. Now the score on the Zovistoski-Mandarino bout is 1-1 with 1 minute left in third.

Cochran leads 2-1 after 1 starting down in the second. Zov and Mandarino are 1-1 and neutral with 30 seconds left in third. Another takedown by Cochran and escape by Griffith for 4-2 Cochran lead with 1 minute left in second. Zovistoski and Mandarino are going to OT.

Zovistoski is able to roll Mandarino over for the winning takedown with 36 seconds remaining in OT for the 3-1 lead.

Cochran still leads 4-2 with Ford down to start the third. Cochran still leads 4-2 with 1:06 left in the third. Escape by Griffith with 55 seconds remaining leaves Cochran leading 4-3 and Griffith going for the winning takedown. Cochran holds him off the 4-3 upset win.

Matt Zovistoski (St. Joseph) d. Dominick Mandarino (Don Bosco), 3-1 (ot); Kyle Cochran (Paramus) d Brady Ford (Bergen Catholic), 4-3.

152 – Joe Trovato (Paramus) v Shane Sosinsky (Northern Highlands); Taylor Shay (Don Bosco) v Andrew Somple (Bergen Catholic)

Trovato and Sosinsky went to the edge in the Bergen final before Trovato came away with a 1-0 win. They went scoreless in the first and Trovato is starting the second down. Trovato with an escape and takedown to take a 3-0 lead with 30 seconds left in second.

Taylor Shay with an emphatic takedown on Somple to take a 2-0 lead early in the first. Shay takes a 2-0 lead into the second with Somple starting down.

Trovato leads 3-0 going into the third with Sosinsky starting down. Trovato riding strong. He turns Sosinsky for two back points for a 5-0 lead with 1:18 left in third. Escape by Sosinsky to pull within 5-1. Trovato wins 5-1 to advance to the finals. He is going for his second straight title and third in four years.

Shay with two back points for a 4-0 lead with 1:15 left in the second. More back points for Shay on a tilt to take a 6-0 lead. Shey leads 6-0 going into the third and takes down. Escape by Shay to improve to 7-0. Less than a minute left in the third here. Shay wins 7-0.

Joe Trovato (Paramus) d Shane Sosinsky (Northern Highlands), 5-1; Taylor Shay (Don Bosco) d Andrew Somple (Bergen Catholic), 7-0.

160 – Tyler Mullen (Old Tappan) v David Brennan (Bergen Catholic); Christian Correa (New Milford) v Vin DiFilippo (St. Joseph)

Brennan with the first takedown but the unbeaten Mullen with the reversal to tie the score and ride him out for a 2-2 tie after one. Mullen starts down in the second and gets and escape and takedown to take a 5-0 lead with 1 minute left in the second. Escape by Brennan to cut lead to 5-3 after two. They start neutral.

Correa and DiFilippo are scoreless early in the first. DiFilippo starts down in the second. Correa going for a tilt but DiFilippo able to slip out and get the reversal to open up a 2-0 lead with about 50 seconds left in second.

Takedown  by Mullen to start third with a 7-3 lead. Escape by Brennan to cut lead to 7-4. Takedown Mullen late in third to go on to a 9-4 win. He is going for his first region title.

DiFilippo still leads 2-0 early in the third riding Correa. He turns Correa for three back points with 30 seconds left in third and goes on to the 5-0 win.

170 – Joe Grello (Bergen Catholic) v Steve Baez (Westwood); Pete Accardi (Don Bosco) v Dominic Mainiero (St. Joseph)

D. Mainiero and Accardi are scoreless with 10 seconds left in the first. D. Man with a takedown with 5 seconds left to take a 2-0 lead after 1. Accardi starts down in second.

Escape by Accardi and TD by DMan at the edge for 4-1 DMan lead. Escape by Accardi to cut lead to 4-2 with 1:10 left in second. DMan gets the TD and puts Accardi to back for a 5-point move and a 9-2 lead with 50 seconds left in second. Escape by Accardi to pull within 9-3 with 30 seconds left in second.

DMan up to 11-3 with 1:43 left in third. Another pair of back points by DMan for a 13-3 lead, now cuts Accardi, for 13-4 lead with a minute left. DMan wins 13-4.

Joe Grello (Bergen Catholic) p Steve Baez (Westwood), 1:04; Dominic Mainiero (St. Joseph) md Peter Accardi (Don Bosco), 13-4.

182 – Kevin Mulligan (Bergen Catholic) v Matt Barile (Ramsey); Vinnie Mainiero (St. Joseph) v Kyle Inlander (Ridgewood)

V Man with the early takedown and Inlander escape for a 2-1 VMan lead with 30 seconds left in first. Inlander with an escape to start the second and tie score 2-2. Takedown VMan and escape by Inlander for 4-3 VMan lead with 11 seconds left in second.

VMan leads 4-3 going to third. Takes down. Inlander cuts him. VMan leads 5-3 to start the third.

VMan stil leads 5-3 with 18 seconds left in third. Inlander pushing for tying takedown. But VMan holding him off and goes on to the 5-4 win.

Kevin Mulligan (Bergen Catholic) p Matt Barile (Ramsey), 1:46; Vinnie Mainiero (St. Joseph) d Kyle Inlander (Ridgewood), 5-4.

195 – Michael Carfagno (St. Joseph) v Brandon Gallagher (Westwood); Dan DeLorenzi (Bergen Catholic) v Jeff Lombardi (Don Bosco)

Carfagno and Gallagher is a rematch of the Bergen final won by Carfagno. Carfagno holds a 2-0 lead wrestling down with 1:20 left in the second. Escape by Carfagno for a 3-0 lead with 30 seconds left in the second.

DeLorenzi already has Lombardi down and on his back for an early 5-point move and a 5-0 lead. DeLorenzi rides Lombardi and takes 5-0 lead into the second starting down.

Carfagno leads Gallagher, 3-0, to start the third with Gallagher starting down. Two more back points for Carfagno for a 5-0 lead with 1:18 left in the thrid. Carfagno wins 5-0 to advance to the finals.

DeLorenzi started down in the second and escaped for a 6-0 lead early in the second. Takedown by DeLorenzi for an 8-0 lead with 1 minute left in second. DeLorenzi with a takedown to start the third to take a 10-0 lead with 1:27 left in third. DeLorenzi goes on to the 10-0 win.

Michael Carfagno (St. Joseph) d  Brandon Gallagher (Westwood), 5-0; Danny DeLorenzi (Bergen Catholic) md Jeff Lombardi (Don Bosco), 10-0.

220 – Shaun Stanley (Pascack Hills) v Joe Jordan (Old Tappan); Erik Chakonis (Don Bosco) v Conor O’Brien (Bergen Catholic)

Takedown by top-seeded Stanley to take a 2-0 lead but Jordan escape at buzzer to cut the lead to 2-1 after one. Jordan down to start the second. Stanley immediately rolls Jordan over and puts him on his back for three back points to start the second with a 5-0 lead.

O’Brien, who fell to Chakonis in the sectional semifinal earlier this month) gets the opening takedown at the edge for a 2-0 lead. Escape by Chakonis with 1 minute left in first for 2-1 COB lead.  OBrien goes into the second with a 2-1 lead on EChak.

Stanley is up 7-1 to start the third. Starts down. Reversal by Stanley to take a 9-1 lead and goes on to the 9-1 lead to advance to the final. THAT WAS STANLEY’S 100TH CAREER WIN.  Beats the 98 by his coach Dave Bucco which I’m sure has been some source of conversation in the Cowboy wrestling room.

EChak down to start the second and escapes to tie the score, 2-2, early. EChak going for the double leg at the edge but they get stalemated and back to the center tied 2-2. Escape by COB for a 3-2 lead with 1:30 left in the third. Still 3-2 COB wrestling neutral with 51 seconds left in the third. COB takedown with 30 seconds remaining to take a 5-2 lead. Now 14 seconds left and EChak needing abig move. COB cuts EChak for 5-3 lead. Six seconds left. EChak can’t get the tying takedown. Conor O’Brien wins 5-3.

Shaun Stanley (Pascack Hills) md Joe Jordan (Old Tappan), 9-1; Conor O’Brien (Bergen Catholic) d Erik Chakonis (Don Bosco), 5-3.

285 – Goran Krasic (Hackensack) v Joe Longobardi (River Dell); Zack Chakonis (Don Bosco) v Joe Caggiano (Bergen Catholic)

Longobardi riding Krasic in the second in a rematch of their Cutter Classic match won by Longobardi. Still scoreless with 1 minute left in second. Escape by Krasic to take a 1-0 lead into the third.

Longobardi starts down in the third. Escape by Longobardi to tie the score, 1-1 with 1:38 left in the third. Still 1-1 with 20 seconds left in the third as neither one has taken a shot.

Krasic finally does but Longobardi is able to avoid it and spin around and on top with 1 second left but official calls it out of bounds and we’re going to OT.

Neither wrestler took a shot in the first overtime and now we’re going to the two 30-second rideouts.

Krasic is down first. Escape by Krasic for a 2-1 lead. By the way, Krasic scored first giving him choice if this goes to ultimate rideoug.

2-1 Krasic going to second rideout. Longobardi down. Longobardi with the escape with two seconds remaining to tie the score, 2-2, and send this to ultimate rideout.

Krasic down. Longobardi has to ride him out for 30 seconds for the win. Krasic up and facing Longobardi but Longobardi holds onto leg and pushes him out of bounds to stay on top with 17 seconds left. Krasic up and facing him again. But Longobardi pushes him down on his back and gets the unlikely pin in 8:30.

ZChak with a quick takedown on Caggiano and three back points for a 5-0 lead and the pin in 58 seconds.

That’s the semis. Now for two rounds of interminable wrestlebacks before the third place consolations around 4 p.m.
